In the modern world of sporting superstars, it’s easy to get distracted by huge results, personal bests, and out-of-this-world performances. But, many athletes, despite the insane levels of natural talent, remain firmly grounded in the real world and are determined to give back to the programs and communities that helped them.
Many talented athletes come from disadvantaged backgrounds themselves, and providing help to others who are struggling probably seems totally natural.
Here’s a group of seven sports stars who all do their bit in different ways to help make the world a better place.
Number One: Cristiano Ronaldo
At the top of this list for a reason, Ronaldo is well-known for his generous spirit and charitable efforts. As well as being an ambassador for Save The Children, he frequently dips into his pocket to help those in need pay for medical bills, amongst other things.
Despite his sometimes aggressive-looking attitude on the pitch, he clearly feels a strong sense of responsibility to use his wealth kindly.
Number Two: Serena Williams
Apart from being one of the most successful tennis players of all time, Serena is also one of international sports’ greatest philanthropists. She particularly focuses on supporting education, especially that of girls and young women, and she has established her own foundation in order to do that. Her work helps impoverished families and children around the globe.
Number Three: LeBron James
LeBron might be a household name now, but he grew up in his humble surroundings in Akron, Ohio. His desire to prove himself and be the best is reflected in his charitable work – as well as his efforts to donate enormous sums to a variety of organizations including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He has built up an education program that extends from primary right through to university education.
Number Four: Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey is another American star who, despite her fearsome presence in the UFC Octagon, has a big heart and has given huge amounts of money to charity. Among the causes she supports are various initiatives to help those struggling with mental health problems.
Number Five: Colin Kaepernick
A divisive and political figure, Colin Kaepernick made headlines in 2016 when he knelt during the national anthem as a protest against racial injustice. Yet, despite the fallout from that, he has continued to work as an activist and charitable figure, supporting education projects and initiatives to help young people in America who are struggling against all forms of discrimination.
Number Six: Neymar Jr.
The Brazilian football star is another example of an incredibly talented, if sometimes controversial, player who also supports the community he came from. Neymar regularly makes big efforts to look after poor Brazilian communities in places like Rio.
Number Seven: Yuna Tim
The South Korean figure skater isn’t as well known in the US and Europe as she should be, but despite being one of Korea’s most prolific Olympians, she’s also one of the biggest philanthropists in sports, giving an enormous amount of her earnings every year to charity.
These are the top seven most charitable athletes out there who constantly do their part to help others who are less fortunate than them.
